On Monday, Jan. 23, Delaware will recognize Maternal Health Awareness Day.

The U.S. is the only developed country in the world with a rising maternal mortality rate. Did you know that approximately 80% of maternal deaths are preventable?

Black women die during and after pregnancy at a rate much higher than white women, usually from cardiac and coronary conditions. Mental health conditions were reported as a leading underlying cause of pregnancy-related deaths among white, Hispanic, and American Indian and Alaska Native women.

Highmark Health Options wants all expecting mothers and their babies to be healthy—physically and mentally. To find maternity care in your area, search the Provider Directory.

Updated Monkeypox Information: What Do You Need to Know?

There are more monkeypox cases in Delaware. As of Aug. 15, 11 cases have been reported in the state. If you’ve been in close contact with someone who has monkeypox, contact your doctor. If you have questions or concerns, call the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) hotline at 1-866-408-1899, Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Or email DPHCall@delaware.gov.

What is monkeypox?
Monkeypox is usually a mild virus that causes a fever and bumpy rash. The rash tends to appear on the face before the body. Other symptoms include intense headache, chills, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. If you have symptoms, contact your health care provider right away.

What if I have symptoms or have been diagnosed?

  • Avoid being intimate with others.
  • Stay in isolation until all lesions have healed, the scabs have fallen off, and a new layer of skin has formed.
  • Contact people you’ve had close contact with in the last 21 days. Let them know they may have been exposed. Here are tips on what to say.

How does monkeypox spread?
Monkeypox can spread between people by breathing in germs during long periods of close contact, by touching the infectious sores or bodily fluids of the sick person, or by touching objects like contaminated bedding or clothing.

How is monkeypox prevented and treated?
Vaccines are given in a two-dose series, 28 days apart. The vaccine is not considered effective until two weeks after the second dose. People who have monkeypox can use antiviral medicine to help make symptoms less severe and stop the spread.

Who is at risk for monkeypox?
People who have certain sexual practices are more likely to be exposed to monkeypox:

  • Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men and have had multiple (more than one) or any anonymous sexual partners.
  • Transgender women or nonbinary persons assigned male at birth who have sex with men.
  • Sex workers (of any sexual orientation/gender).
  • Staff (of any sexual orientation/gender) at establishments where sexual activity occurs (e.g., bathhouses, saunas, sex clubs).

Who should be vaccinated?
It is not necessary for everyone to get the monkeypox vaccination. People with HIV and those in the above risk groups will be eligible for the vaccination starting the week of Aug. 22. Call the DPH hotline at 1-866-408-1899 for more information. Another option is to register in advance for a monkeypox vaccination event. The event will be held Aug. 25 from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. at the Community Services Building located at 100 W. 10th Street in Wilmington. Only 200 time slots are available, so registration is required. Walk-ins will not be accepted. To register, call AIDS Delaware at 1-302-652-6776.

What else should I know?
Monkeypox is much less contagious than COVID-19. Social distancing, handwashing, and sanitizing will help control its spread.

To learn more about monkeypox, visit de.gov/monkeypox. For more information about symptoms, prevention, and treatment, visit the CDC website.

Monkeypox: what do you need to know?

Cases of monkeypox have been recently reported in several countries that don’t normally have monkeypox. If you’ve been in close contact with someone who has it, please contact your doctor. Visit the CDC website for information about symptoms, prevention, and treatment.

What is monkeypox?
Monkeypox is usually a mild virus that causes a fever and a bumpy rash. The rash tends to appear on the face before spreading elsewhere on the body. Other symptoms include intense headache, chills, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. Symptoms can last up to 3 weeks. Note: though symptoms are similar, monkeypox is not the same as chickenpox.

How does monkeypox spread?
Monkeypox is rare and can spread to people in two ways: touching sick animals like monkeys and rodents, or eating contaminated wild animal meat. Monkeypox can spread between people by breathing in germs during long periods of close contact, by touching the infectious sores or bodily fluids of the sick person, or by touching objects like contaminated bedding or clothing.

How is monkeypox treated?
Treatment for monkeypox includes the vaccine and antiviral medication to stop the spread and help lessen severity.

What do I do now?
Don’t panic. Monkeypox is much less contagious than COVID-19. Social distancing, handwashing, and sanitizing will help control its spread.

Baby formula shortage

A national shortage of baby formula has many parents worried they won’t be able to feed their babies. More than 40% of top-selling formula brands are reportedly out of stock at stores around the country. The shortage is caused by pandemic supply issues and the recalls and shutdown of an Abbott Laboratories production plant in February. Parents of babies who rely on formula are anxious about the shortage. We urge families to contact their pediatricians with any questions or concerns.

Recognizing Maternal Health Awareness Day

On Sunday, Jan. 23, Delaware will recognize Maternal Health Awareness Day.

You may already know that the U.S. is the only developed country in the world with a rising maternal mortality rate, but did you know that approximately 60% of maternal deaths are preventable?

Racial inequality contributes to that difference: Black women die during and after pregnancy at a rate three times higher than white women, and those who are American Indian and Alaska Native die at a rate two times higher than white women. The COVID-19 pandemic has also contributed to recent maternal mortality rates. The virus is associated with increased risk of severe complications — including death — during pregnancy.

Highmark Health Options wants all expecting mothers and their babies to be healthy. To find maternity care in your area, search the Provider Directory.
